Relaxers (Harmful)

A HEALTHY lifestyles specialist of the African-Hebrew Development Agency (AHDA), Ms Tovleeyah Israel, has explained that relaxers and other harsh chemicals used to relax or perm hair are harmful to human health.
She indicated that chemicals directly entered the capillary scalp area into the brain to cause harm to other organs.
“This practice is a direct reflection of the enormous psychic damage that is a testimony of a deep-seated inferiority complex," she said.
Ms Israel reiterated that hair braids were an important part of culture and that they had historically been a barometer of the national consciousness of Africans and cited the examples of Samson in the Bible, the Mau-Mau of Kenya and the Rastafarians in Africa and the Americas during the 1960s and 1970s.
“It is about time African women appreciated their being and projected what they have for others to admire them, rather than just copying anything foreign, without giving a second thought to the implications,” she advised.
The Daily Graphic spoke with a beautician at the Forever Clare (FC) Clinic, Madam Cecilia Mensah, who said although one might initially find it a little more expensive to fix weave-ons, they required little maintenance, which enabled the hair to last longer.
“Braiding your hair is a good way to save money, as you won't need to have the process repeated for some time,” she added.
